Mechanism of Action
Cetirizine is a potent and highly selective antagonist of the peripheral histamine H1-receptor on effector cells in the GI tract, blood vessels and resp tract.
Absorption: Absorbed rapidly from the GI tract. Food delays time to peak plasma concentrations. Time to peak plasma concentration: Approx 1 hr.
Distribution: Enters breast milk. Volume of distribution: 0.39-0.6 L/kg. Plasma protein binding: Approx 93%.
Metabolism: Undergoes low degree hepatic first-pass metabolism.
Excretion: Via urine as unchanged drug. Elimination half-life: Approx 10 hr.
