Mechanism of Action
Bisacodyl acts mainly in the large intestine by increasng its motility to effect bowel evacuation.
Onset: 6-12 hr (oral). 15-60 min (rectal).
Absorption: Minimal from the GI tract (oral, as enteric-coated tablets/suppositories).
Metabolism: Converted to bis(p-hydroxyphenyl)pyridyl-2-methane by intestinal or bacterial enzymes.
Excretion: Faeces; urine (as glucuronide).
